Conversations with Self

Image
How often do you talk to yourself? You know-discussions that involve a complete self-reassessment. A mental back-and-forth, an inner discourse, self-reflection that projects into self-examination. To most people, this could mean positive self-talk, alignment with the soul, or strategic intrapersonal communication. Most times, in order to achieve this feat, one needs to be in great alignment with the self. Research has discovered in recent times that about half of the human population does not possess the ability to have an inner dialogue. This is funny and alarming at the same time because, 'what do you mean there are people who do not have an inner voice that speaks to them?' Philosopher Socrates famously asserted that, “The unexamined life is not worth living,” emphasizing the centrality of inner reflection to human existence. Our inner voice plays huge roles. First, it serves as an observer, and second, as a judge of all our actions, speeches, and mannerisms. These are...

HIV/AIDS STIGMA - The awkward hush - Hassana Suleiman

I wondered if she didn’t feel out of place, if she didn’t care that everyone there saw her face. She laughed and looked at me, beady eyed, the most determined eyes I’ve ever seen. She said, what’s there to hide anty. If anyone would look at me and laugh at my predicament or make mockery of me, what does that make them? Why trample on somebody that’s already down. Why would anyone want to kick a person who has hit rock bottom into the curb? Her eyes watered a bit as she said these words. She didn’t seem like a person in despair. She had accepted her fate and she was determined to push forward. I wondered how she managed to seem so calm despite all that has happened to her. I knew there was chaos and a storm in her head but she carried it well with a confidence I’ve never seen before and a graceful poise that could never be broken by any form of condemnation. She was a warrior designed to push forward through her own path. There are thousands of people like this lady I have just describ...

There was a country "The here and now" - Hassana Suleiman

Methodologically, Nigeria could be diagnosed as unstable and a deteriorate by anyone with a clear view of the outrageous mismanagement, overflow of inhumanity of citizens against one another. A clean proof of the facts that lie within Chinua’s historical observation, perceptions and entire literature inserted into the text of his last book, ‘There Was a Country’. The problem didn’t stem from now, it has its aged roots deeply infused into the Nigerian soil. What we see and hear now are just the fruits borne by the poisonous trees we have failed to chop off. We planted a flytrap and wonder why it snaps its fangs at us. Silly us. Yes, we may claim that Nigeria is one hell of a heterogenous territory and that it may never be possible to achieve national peace, rationalism in ethnicity or religious tolerance, or that corruption as a canker has eaten deeply into the nations fabric but our biggest error was losing history. The country has recieved jabs that has sent it into a trance of ‘e ...

Time always tells - Hassana Suleiman

A lot of humans have a rift with time. An emotion that suggests a fear of change. So many feel that time is too slow, it makes them antsy while some feel that it is too fast, makes them feel out of control. Whichever the case may be, we may never be satisfied with time or life in its entirety. We forget that time is not an opponent, but our friend in actual sense of thoughts. We just hate for the truth to be presented to us, right in our faces and that is exactly what time does. It always tells. Time may seem like a harbinger of sorrow, defeat, may even look like endings which we detest, because we tend to look more at thing that have gone instead of the new chapters that have been unfolded before us. Time will tell on you when you’re true, when you’re lazy, when you’ve been mean, when you’ve put in the work and also when you decide to be apathetic towards life. Time and truth work in similar factories. With karma as their handbook, they have these characteristics that rile up peopl...

The Other Side of Abuse

Maybe or maybe not human beings were created to use only their good side, the side that articulates love, care, patience, tolerance and understanding, and on the other hand we were granted the opposite trait which every one believes emanates from the bad one, thereby creating the ideology of good and bad in man. Abuse, has its many triggers as well as consequences, neither of which is good. It stems from a fast speeding circle of less use of conscience, psychological problems, the attack, the victims silence and then his or her outburst, finally speaking out, reprisal of the abuser or years of mind damaging predicaments on the part of the victim. Abuse happens everyday, every time and as frequent as we can never imagine, because the trend has been made common and accepted as the norm. The world has become a wild forest where the weak or less fortunate is preyed upon, where having a good conscience is looked upon as being weak or timid. Where a person pokes you in the eye, and expects...

If Nigeria Falls.

This phrase, resonates in almost every conversation about Nigeria. The non stop ethnic conflict, tribalism and complete disgust and distrust for each other. This talk about Nigeria's tangibility, started from the very beginning, from the day we developed the idea to rule ourselves. We were handed over a country at the brink of a collapse to handle. A mutation of the place we call home, a make believe development and an obvious hapharzard arrangement of tribes and colonies. As expected from a state, we were supposed to live in peace and try to tolerate one another’s missteps. You cannot control what you do not understand. Nigerians do not understand this new place. Sixty years later, and we still don’t. For a people who easily succumbed to colonialism, and accepted foreign rules without hesitation, self rule is as like a suicide we imposed on ourselves. It was just like trying to tackle a deadly contagion without first making the necessary research required to manouever it. If N...

Today's Woman

So far, it has been a tireless struggle. In a bid to seperate the tangled connections that have rendered the human race confused about the real position of the woman! Do not revert this message into a feminist movement, and we cannot deny that modernity and civilization has stylishly degraded the worth of women, and we are now looked upon as mere things. There’s a lot of responsibility attached to being female. Many may see this write up as too much analysis of the gender subject matter, because we have a general acceptance that the world is as it is supposed to be. True, but humans factor on most of the issues connected with the dynamic nature of life. There’s a whole lot of factors including shifts in paradigm, era modification, evolution, behavioral patterns, and the overall twist in the designation of gender roles caused by mostly economic factors, knowledge and awareness perceived negatively or positively depending on every individuals level of comprehension. Today as a woman in...
